Sloshing interaction in ship collisions—An experimental and numerical study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sloshing interaction in ship collisions is studied both experimentally and numerically. The rapid change in ship motions resulting from contact loading in collisions initiates violent sloshing inside partially filled liquid tanks on board. Sloshing affects the collision dynamics and reduces the amount of energy available for structural deformations. An understanding of this interaction phenomenon was obtained by a series of model-scale experiments, in which a striking ship, with two partially filled tanks, collided with an initially motionless struck ship without any liquid on board. The influence on the structural deformation of the fluid mass in the tanks and the velocity of the collision was studied. Numerical simulations of the cases were performed, combining a linear sloshing model with a theoretical collision model. The simulation model was validated with experimental results and good agreement was achieved in the case of medium filling levels in the tanks, while correspondingly the deformation energy was overestimated by up to 10% for shallow filling levels. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The Effects of Tank Sloshing on Lng Vessel and Floating Terminal Responses
In the conventional ship-motion analysis, the effects of inner free surface have been usually ignored. Recent experimental and numerical studies have shown that the coupling effect between liquid cargo sloshing and LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) ship motion can be significant at certain frequency range of partially filled tanks. This is of great concern to the LNG FPSO/FSRU operation in the product...

متن کاملCoupling between Flexible Ship and Liquid Sloshing Using Potential Flow Analysis and Its Effect on Wave-induced Loads
In this paper the potential flow approach adopted in previous investigations for the coupling effect between rigid body ship motion and sloshing is extended to the flexible ship-partially filled tank system, using the de-singularised Rankine source method. The unified method is verified by applying it to the sloshing in a partially filled rectangular tank with a flexible wall. The main aim of t...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical investigation of 2D sloshing: scenarios near the critical filling depth
Sloshing is an important issue for LNG tanks and in general when partially filled tanks are on-board of a vessel. This resonance phenomenon may be connected with complex motions of the filled liquid that can couple with the ship motions and can represent a danger for the tank strucure and for the stability of the ship. In this context, it is very important to identify the possible scenarios ass...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Vertical and Horizontal Baffle Effects on Liquid Sloshing in a Rectangular Tank Using an Improved Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Method
Liquid sloshing is a common phenomenon in the transporting of liquid tanks. Liquid waves lead to fluctuating forces on the tank wall. If these fluctuations are not predicted or controlled, they can lead to large forces and momentum. Baffles can control liquid sloshing fluctuations. One numerical method, widely used to model the liquid sloshing phenomena is Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH)....
